DIY Site Builders vs Custom Builds

We often get asked this question....

Why should I employ ByteBox to make my website, when I can create my own for cheaper?

So instead of shying away from the answer... let's try and answer it honestly.

What is a Site Builder?

Do-it-yourself website builders have been around for many years now, and are seen to provide a 'quick', 'cheap' solution to getting a web presence for a business. They're usually web based platforms that allow the average Joe to create a website, with no-coding skills.

There's many examples out there, some much better than others, but perhaps one of the big names is Wix.

Pros

  • No technical skills needed
  • Affordable, as you create and maintain it yourself
  • Often includes free hosting
  • Library of templates
  • Quick development

Cons

  • Limited advanced functionality
  • Templates aren't exclusive and unique
  • Minimal search engine optimisation (SEO)
  • Some plugins / customisations cost extra, e.g. custom domain, shopping carts

Many site builders claim you can 'create a website in minutes'. Well, true.... you can. But if you're new to the platform, not quite that tech savvy, or want a website that will really 'bring home the bacon', then you're going to want to spend a lot longer customising it - and don't forget to put a price on your time.

So here's the bottom line. If you have the time to spare, and don't mind having a template driven website, then site builders are a great tool, and could save you money (if you don't go for all the extras). But investing in a pro may save you cash (and headaches) in the long run, along with freeing up your time to do what you do best - run your business.

Web developers aren't all weird geeky nerds who hide away in caves either - have a chat with us and you're likely to end up with a much better website that fully meets your needs.
